Mega Cicada
by Ian Chang
Released on September 13th, 2023, has 18,615 views
At its core, "Mega Cicada" is a simple study of a single rhythmic phrase. The phrase is inspired by the way that great vocalists approach rhythm when singing melody. There’s an emotive depth to the way that certain notes in certain melodies feel good to place “behind” or “ahead” where it might be written and highlighting the intricacies of this approach to rhythm by having a short 1 bar phrase repeat over the course of the piece while the rhythmic context and arrangement changes. The name came from how I approached the sound design of the bass samples. The bass sounds in this piece imagine what a giant cicada capable of producing sub frequencies might sound like.
Home/Gone
by Clara Warnaar
Released on September 1st, 2023, has 2,037 views
Home/Gone is a piece inspired by the unsettling feeling of my auto-correct switching the word “home” to “gone”. A meditation on impermanence, Home/Gone, written for 2 percussionists, a pianist, and an electronic track pre-recorded by the Pathos Trio, gives the listener a taste of something familiar (Home) and gradually takes it away (Gone). That unsettling deconstruction of what we began with gets replaced by something more distorted and complex, but potentially beautiful. cccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc
fiction of light
by Evan Chapman
Released on November 21st, 2021, has 4,436 views
fiction of light was inspired by Tacita Dean’s thoughts on the colors of magic hour and our physical relationship to those colors, as I became increasingly interested in finding ways to similarly manipulate color palettes within an acoustic ensemble. The techniques I settled on entailed supplementing acoustic elements with subtle electronic ones, while leaving an aura of mystery for the listener as to how those electronic elements were being produced by not sending them directly into a traditional PA system but instead into the players’ instruments and handheld communication devices. ccccccccccccccccc
Delirious Phenomena
by Alyssa Weinberg
Released on October 13th, 2021, has 7,509 views
The title for Delirious Phenomena comes from the Surrealist idea of the paranoiac-critical method, a way of perceiving reality defined by Salvador Dali as the 'spontaneous method of irrational knowledge basedon the interpretative-critical association of delirious phenomena.'
Works created with this method often involved hallucinations, optical illusions and other multiple images. Focusing on a unified and shared setup, I wanted to have all members of the trio work together to manipulate the piano, discovering sounds in the spirit of this 'spontaneous method
Split
by Phong Tran
Released on October 30th, 2023, has 12,152 views
This piece is about the feeling of want between two things that feel diametrically opposed to each other, unable to make a decision in either case. There’s a version of this called option paralysis where the options laid in front of you leave you still, unable to make a choice in any direction. And then there’s the version where you actively pursue each option against each other because you really have no other choice but to work both with and against yourself. From the constant back and forth between both drum sets and the solo synths being in the forefront, this synth wave/double kick drum trio will bring you for a wild, nonstop ride.
21,600
by Paul Mortilla
Released on August 31st, 2023, has 2,257 views
As described by Paul Mortilla, Tibetan yogis say we breathe, on average, 21600 breaths each day. We often forget that the simple act of breathing is the most essential task we perform each day. In this piece I take that concept of breathing and explore what happens when we enter into a rhythm and center ourselves on a single focus. The result is an upwelling of energy and excitement that is always present, should we take a moment to be still and listen.
Distance Between Places
by Alan Hankers
Released on April 10th, 2019, has 7,905 views
Distance Between Places was inspired by the relationship between the soundscape of a particular place and memory while I would be on tour with metal bands. Much of the work consists of individual musical streams that are independent in terms of rhythm, timbre, and expressive shape, but still blend together that results in a unified sonic picture. As the work unfolds, various layers emerge to the foreground to form distinct rhythmical sections that symbolize remembering and reordering. In this way, the title refers to the sounds of somewhere as it exists, and how our memory of that place changes over time.
Dance of the Drums
by Gene Koshinski
Released on May 31st, 2021, has 780 views
American composer Gene Koshinski’s Dance of the Drums, is the 2nd movement of a larger piece called “Song and Dance.” Normally this fast-paced work is performed through a single shared set-up utilizing concert toms, claves, a conch, and other assorted concert percussion instruments, but with particular rendition of the piece, percussionists of Pathos Trio (Felix Reyes and Marcelina Suchocka) create their own, unique, remote pre-recorded presentation of this heavy hitting duo!
PITY
by Andrew M Rodriguez
Released on December 6th, 2023, has 11,773 views
Memory is a force in and of itself. It holds sway over us, influencing even the most base understanding of ourselves. It is not simply a type of biological documentation. Even the recorded past is only an account of what once was. Our memories offer so much more. There is an understanding of body, mind, and spirit that is embedded within memories. We often seek them out, struggling to dig through the trenches of our deepest thoughts, hoping to uncover the past which only exists to us in fragments. So often do memories collide with one another, distorting and contorting from the impact that they may become something entirely new.
Monolitos
by Vicente Hansen Atria
Released on October 9th, 2023, has 7,647 views
For Monolitos, I drew on some of the characteristics I associate with monoliths: uniformity, rigidity, hardness. These translated into a discrete approach to musical parameters. Terraced dynamics, distorted difference tones, tight rhythmic unisons, block forms, juxtaposition, and repetition are some of the ways in which I create syntactical musical equivalents for the monolithic, a fundamentally visual and tactile experience. By minimizing continuous changes in the realm of dynamics, timbre, and form, music becomes rigid and opaque yet kinetic, asking us to wonder about the private life of large stones.
Prayer Variations
by Alison Yun-Fei Jiang
Released on December 4th, 2021, has 3,087 views
Inspired by visits to cathedral spaces in Europe and to some of the most famous cathedrals in New York City such as Saint John the Divine, Prayer Variations is a theme and variations based on a simple, prayer-like melody. Over the course of the piece, the original prayer melody is varied and transforms between each of the players parts. The music then unfolds into a sonic experience in motion that brings the listener through a journey of imagery, sonorous sounds, and vertical space. cccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc
falling flames
by Finola Merivale
Released on July 26th, 2021, has 1,407 views
falling flames comes from the phrase “burning the candle at both ends”, as it was written during an incredibly stressful and busy period in Finola’s life. As the piece gradually falls through the various registers, the energy changes from fast-paced semiquaver repetitions to slower passages with more space, allowing the music to resonate. The piece gives the performer the complete freedom to jump backwards to a previous passage, jolting the listener back into an earlier frenzy, while also allowing the performer to choose how often each measure is repeated. Length and instrumentation are open to the performer(s).
