Our Core Programs/Educational Services
1) COMMISSIONING PROGRAM - Every season we commission 4-6 composers who come from underrepresented communities, have had little opportunities to present their work in public, and write music that reflects Pathos Trio's interests in chamber music. For example, during our 2022-2023 season, we commissioned 6 works by NYC based composers Paul Mortilla, Clara Warnaar, Ian Chang, Phong Tran, and Vicente Hansen Atria, and Andrew Rodriguez. We then recorded both audio & video of all these works at Oktaven Audio LLC located in Mount Vernon, NY, with Grammy Nominated Audio Engineer Ryan Streber, and award winning film company Four/Ten Media. These recordings eventually became a part of Pathos’ second studio album Polarity that provided significant professional development to all composers involved and made contributions to the New York City classical/contemporary music scene. For our 2023-24 season we are currently commissioning composers Vijay Iyer, Scott Li, Jlin Patton, Will Healy, and Rafiq Bhatia.
2) PERFORMANCE PROGRAM - As a chamber music ensemble, performing is at the forefront of what we do. In a given year we present 15-20 concerts & reach over 1,500 audiences goers through in-person performances and tens of thousands more through the release of new music videos we record each season. Through the various commissions we’ve accumulated, our group offers a wide variety of music programs that we can present for various occasions & tailor to presenters depending on where we perform.
In 2023 for example, we performed a total of 26 in-person concerts, which included our debuts at DiMenna Center for Classical Music, Roulette Intermedium, and Timucua Arts Foundation. Through observing box office sales, online RSVPs, and YouTube views we were able to engage with 1,632 audience goers in-person and 53,419 viewers virtually through the release of our 6 Polarity music videos and live-streamed events.
3) EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS - Outside of the concert hall, we engage with schools across New York City, Chicago, and Florida, to provide free educational programming, which we deliver in the form of 5-6 week music residencies. We currently have 6 school partners across New York City, Chicago, and in Sarasota, FL that include PS163 (Brooklyn), Corlears School (Manhattan), Sunset Park High School (Chicago), Renaissance Charter School in Jackson Heights (Queens), Marvin Camras Children’s Engineering School (Chicago), and Alta Vista Elementary (Sarasota).
In 2023 we served 453 students between all 6 locations and each school year we crafted our music residency curriculums alongside our supervising teachers and staff, in order to tailor each of our residencies to the wants and needs of each school and their students.
We also offer a wide variety of other educational services outside of public school teaching, such as:
Being able to provide different types of lectures (such as talking about fundraising, setting up a 501c3, promoting your events)
Offering masterclasses and workshops for students from High School to Collegiate Level that focus on topics such as (but not limited to) orchestral playing, writing for percussion and piano, and chamber music playing as an ensemble
Leading audiences through our rehearsal process, to answering questions regarding our commissioned repertoire through open rehearsals and demonstrations of our music to those interested in getting an introduction to how our group operates and performs as a unit
At the core of our mission, we strongly believe in giving back to our communities and those we perform for. From talking to collegiate/graduate levels students, to visiting middle school and high school students, Pathos Trio offers interactive educational workshops for students of all ages.
4) COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVES - Every year Pathos Trio organizes 1-2 large-scale community events in New York City that serve towards raising funds for a charitable cause or organization whose core mission positively impacts low income, marginalized communities. To make this initiative a success, our ensemble partners with local and national organizations, artists, venues, and volunteer community members to make these events possible.
An example of this includes our 2020 Virtual Fundraiser we curated in partnership with New Music USA, BLK JOY, & spoken word poet Roya Marsh that raised over $10,000 for Black Lives Matter activist groups Freedom March, Strategy For Black Lives, Warriors In The Garden, and Black Lives Matter NY back in July 2020 during the height of the George Floyd protests. Artists involved included Jessie Montgomery, Flutronix, Darian Donovan Thomas, Kendall Williams, Elliot Bless, and spoken word poets Jennifer Falu and Mahogany Browne.
